Why Qatar is Leading the World in AI

After it's succsess of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has set an ambitious Vision 2030, emphasizing artificial intelligence (AI) as a cornerstone for its future development. Dubbed as the “Year of AI,” 2023 has seen AI dominate discussions from technical levels to strategic boardrooms in Qatar. This surge in AI interest is justified, given AI’s transformative impact across various sectors, signaling a future where AI is an integral part of Qatar's society.

Since the launch of the National AI Strategy in 2019, Qatar has been a beacon of AI innovation in the Middle East. The strategy outlined by Qatar's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) aimed to cultivate a landscape ripe for technological advancements, propelling Qatar’s AI market towards an impressive annual growth rate of 17.4%, with projections reaching $58.8 million by 2026.

Transforming User Experiences

One of the early adopters in Qatar, Hukoomi, utilized advanced AI technologies to revolutionize citizen services, offering seamless AI-driven experiences that were further showcased during the FIFA World Cup. Similarly, Qatar Foundation and Invest Qatar are leveraging AI to enhance interactions through advanced chatbots like BOTaina and Ai.SHA, improving engagement with both local and international stakeholders in Qatar.

Empowering Decision Making

Qatar's Ministry of Labour has implemented AI to provide valuable labor-market insights to government entities, aiding in informed decision-making for sustainable development. This is a testament to AI’s capability to influence both commercial and societal progress in Qatar.

Fostering Sustainability

Aligned with the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, AI and data innovations are crucial in driving sustainable practices. Through these technologies, organizations in Qatar can make data-driven decisions to meet their climate goals while fostering economic growth.

Driving Research and Innovation

In the cultural sector, the National Museum of Qatar employs AI to engage broader audiences via the NMoQ Explorer, an interactive virtual museum platform. This initiative not only enhances cultural dissemination but also showcases the potential of AI in enriching user experiences in Qatar.

The Road Ahead

Despite these advancements, there is ongoing work to ensure the future readiness of the workforce in Qatar. The National Skilling Program, initiated by MCIT in 2022, aims to equip 50,000 individuals with advanced digital skills, including AI, with over 30,000 professionals already trained.
