Securing Your Digital World: Highlights from Data Privacy Week 2024 by the National Cybersecurity Alliance

The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) is held its third annual Data Privacy Week on January 22nd to January 27th. During this week, the NCA focused on the importance of digital privacy for both individuals and businesses through educational webinars featuring industry experts.

Lisa Plaggemier, the Executive Director at NCA, highlighted the growing risk to personal privacy due to the constant collection of large amounts of data through social media, apps, and internet-connected devices. She stressed the need for people and businesses to educate themselves and actively protect sensitive data in the absence of sufficient regulations. Data Privacy Week aims to inspire better data stewardship and empower people to control their digital footprints.

This year's theme, "Take Control of Your Data," emphasizes the significant data generated by online presence. It encourages adopting repeatable behaviors to actively manage personal data, even though individuals can't control all collected data.

NCA is hosting events with privacy experts, policymakers, and engineers to promote the campaign's theme. These events aim to facilitate interactive discussions, share insights, and provide practical strategies for navigating the evolving landscape of data privacy.

Data Privacy Week builds on the success of Data Privacy Day, which started in the United States and Canada in January 2008. The campaign commemorates the signing of Convention 108 on January 28, 1981, the first legally binding international treaty addressing privacy and data protection.

The National Cybersecurity Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more secure, interconnected world. They advocate for the safe use of technology, educate on effective cybersecurity practices, and build partnerships between governments and corporations. Key efforts include Cybersecurity Awareness Month (October), Data Privacy Week (Jan. 22-28th), and CyberSecure My Business™, providing resources to help businesses resist and recover from cyberattacks.
